Michelle Obama’s recent opening of the Organic Freshfarm Market just a block away from the White House, is yet another sign that locally produced organic foods have become a big hit across the USA. Today we – the ladies of the Worldconnectors on a mission – went to the other Freshfarm Market in Washington to find out what is the secret of the still growing success.
Though it is a morning market, our day started a lot earlier because our jetlag served us well, which resulted in ladies behind laptops, writing articles, making appointments and doing some last minute research. After the working Sunday breakfast meeting we extended our research at the Organic Freshfarm Market. What makes this market so successful? The success can be traced back way before Michelle Obama’s focus on healthy foods, though her support clearly adds to the charm. Farmers told us that in times where products are being manipulated and conservatives added extensively, people really appreciate to know where their food comes from and can talk with the farmers themselves about the way the foods are produced. When interviewing one of the local farmers on camera, one of the buyers nodded affirmatively and added just to be sure, “that it also just really tastes good!” After many talks we found that local pride, food security, and great taste are the dominant reasons to pay a little extra for organic fresh food. And as always when celebrities like Michelle Obama lead the way, it is just a little easier to follow. As with most markets, the Freshfarm market closed in the early afternoon. And since we are Dutch ladies, we decided to use the rest of the day to discover Washington by the ever environmentally friendly bike.
After the early laptop morning, the informative talks with local Farmers, and a beautiful bike ride, we ended our first day in Washington DC yet again behind our laptops. This time listening to our own Dutch farmers, not talking about healthy foods, but about healthy feelings of love in ‘Boer zoekt Vrouw’. Farmer looking for wife.
