New ScarcitiesSocieties and individuals worldwide are increasingly confronted with the threat of scarcity. The recent spike in the prices of both food and oil worries governments and consumers alike. We as Worldconnectors are deeply concerned about what clearly are severe new global challenges. While we acknowledge the urgency of these issues for the Netherlands and the European Union at large, we are perhaps even more concerned about the impact of new scarcities on the situation of people in developing countries. Worldconnectors Jos van Gennip, Johan van de Gronden, Tineke Lambooy, Herman Mulder, Hans Eenhoorn and Leontien Peeters have urged Prime Minister Balkenende to plead for a real turn to global sustainable development at the G20 in London. In the document they presented, they refer to the Ubuntu declaration which was composed on request of Gordon Brown and Desmond Tutu as input for the G20. The Worldconnectors call for attention during the meeting, for the opportunities that sustainable bio-energy can offer in these times of crises.
