The Worldconnectors are cordially inviting your organization to join a coalition that stresses the importance of role of business, civil society and cross-sector partnerships in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

As you know, the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will expire in 2015 and the UN is currently holding discussions on the post-2015 development agenda. This new agenda provides an important opportunity for many Dutch business and civil society organizations to show that together they have an important role to play in global development. At the same time, by connecting to a multi-stakeholder coalition we can leverage efforts to contribute to development.

A number of stakeholders have already joined the coalition, including DSM, NewForesight and the True Price Foundation. We hope that we can also count on your organization as a signatory to the charter and will be sending you an invitation to our high-level signing event in September. We are gathering case studies to include alongside the charter as further evidence of the contribution of various sectors. The new Charter, an introduction to the Charter, case template as well as the programme of the past session can be found below.

You received an invitation to the Worldconnectors and partners’ session on a covenant for the role of private sector in poverty eradication and global development on 19 May 2014 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague. Many thanks to the nearly 50 diverse representatives from civil society, business and government who attended the session and provided feedback on the covenant and its contents.

Members of the Worldconnectors working group (Cristina Valencia, Laure Heilbron, Adrian de Groot Ruiz, Leonardo Verkooijen, Reinier van Winden and Alba Tiley) have taken your suggestions for the covenant on board. With your input, we have made the following modifications:

  • renaming the joint document a “charter” rather than a “covenant”,
  • broadening its scope to include civil society and cross-sector partnerships rather      than just private sector,
  • reduced its total length and simplified its wording.

We believe this new version results in a more inclusive document that highlights the potential contribution of all Dutch non-state actors in the post-2015 global development agenda. We aim for the charter to contribute to the discussion on an active role for these sectors in the new agenda, by demonstrating that a well-defined role for these sectors can be formulated.
