Professional background
Tariq Ramadan was born in 1962 in Geneva, Switzerland. Through his writings and lectures he has contributed substantially to the debate on the issues of Muslims in the West and Islamic revival in the Muslim world. He is active both at the academic and grassroots levels lecturing extensively throughout the world on social justice and dialogue between civilizations.
- Professor of Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Theology at Oxford University, Senior Research Fellow St Antony’s College (Oxford), Doshisha University (Kyoto, Japan) and at the Lokahi Foundation (London), (2008)
- Visiting Professor in charge of the Chair: "Citizenship and Identity" at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (both Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Arts and History). This Chair is made possible by the municipality of Rotterdam since 2007.
- President of the European think tank: European Muslim Network (EMN) in Brussels.
- Prof. dr. Tariq Ramadan holds an MA in Philosophy and French literature and PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Geneva. In Cairo, he was trained in classic Islamic scholarship at Al-Azhar University.
